About the Writer

What shapes all of us are the areas where we were raised, the experiences we’ve enjoyed –or endured- and those who have populated our lives. I am no different. A small town on the Illinois River is a good place for a creative person to grow up, Chicago is a good place to spread one’s wings, and a big town on the Roanoke River is a good place for a middle-aged recovering teacher to hide out.

Like a lot of people, my interests sprawl all over the place, therefore the topics you are likely to find here: food and cooking (I live to eat!), the curse of the writer, artsy projects, gardening (herbs & weeds, herbs & weeds, and more herbs & weeds), books (you can’t have too many), Da Cubs, exasperation with local politics, and whatever is happening in my wonderful constellation of friends and family – I’m really blessed in that regard.

My household is populated by Big Kitty, my long-suffering spouse; our three large cats, Barney Reid Jr., Charlie Byrd Sawtell, and Simon Kahn (Yeah, they have middle names – how else can we show them we mean business?); around 10 sets of china; a lot of tools and computer stuff; and a 1913 Studebaker Big Six touring car crammed into a garage built for a ’36 Ford 3 window coupe. We fight the battle of the bulge on all fronts!
